The Problem

The concept of a Hydrogen Economy is not new. NASA has been using H2 technology in the space program and considers it the safest fuel they work with. The next time you see the space shuttle, realize you are watching H2 technology in action. The newest H2 Technology is being used in military applications such as submarines. Since one of the byproducts of H2 production and consumption is CLEAN AIR, it makes it possible for submarines to stay submersed for weeks or months at a time by contributing to the oxygen needed by its crew while creating a power source at the same time.

So why has the hydrogen economy not emerged yet? There have been 3 basic problems:

Production

There is more than one way to produce Hydrogen:

  • Split the H2 molecule from water using electricity through a process known as electrolyses.
  • Steam reforming of natural gas to H2
  • Thermo chemical reactions that release hydrogen from water or biomass
  • Microbial activity that releases hydrogen from organic compounds such as biomass wastes  

    Since it takes energy to perform these processes, the question is how much energy is lost during the process? How much does it cost to release H2 from these other resources? Historically, the cost to do so has been prohibitive. Further, if you are using electricity, what is its source? If the source is a coal fired electric utility, the air is being polluted in the process which negates a huge part of the benefits.

    If production should be relatively near the end user, what will be the financial and political cost of creating a production infrastructure?

    Storage

    Let’s say we have solved the dilemma of the production of H2, then how is it stored? Where do you store volumes and volumes of Hydrogen for an entire community or city?

    Transportation

    Once you have H2, how do you get it to the end customer? It has to be some how delivered to businesses, homes and fueling stations. Will trucks work? Or how about a sophisticated pipeline throughout the city? And what will transportation add to the cost of the H2?

    Historically it has not been cost effective on a large-scale basis. If a new technology addresses these issues but adds to the cost of fueling your car or heating your home, how many people would be interested in it?
